Distinguished Young Women honor First Responders

SHELLEY – First Responders from Firth and Shelley gathered at the Shelley 3rd/5th Ward building yesterday evening, March 11, as the Distinguished Young Women guests, who honored them for their service.  

Firth and Shelley First Responders were treated to a dinner and entertainment last night as the DYW program. The event included a buffet table of food and entertainment from this year’s DYW contestants.  

“We wanted to show our gratitude for all they do for us.† reigning DYW Adelyn Thompson said. “We have all the girls who will be participating in this year’s pageant here to show off their talents. I just wanted to show them what service they could do.†

Thompson spent her year reigning DYW, serving others in many different ways.

“I put on a couple of blood drives together because there is a major blood shortage. And, I have done a bunch of service at the library. I have also had a book club with young girls from both Firth and Shelley to teach them to become their best selves because that is what Distinguished Young Women is all about,†Thompson said. 

The sponsors of the night’s event included Matthews Plumbing, Cox’s Honey, Stoneridge Dental, Micks, Shelley Eye Care, with Broulim’s providing the food. 

DYW is part of a national scholarship program that promotes and rewards scholarship, leadership, and talent in young women. Cash scholarships are awarded locally, and millions in college-granted scholarships are available. And local winners will advance to t eh state program in Idaho Falls, where they give away more than $30,200 in cash tuition scholarships.  

This year’s DYW pageant will be held on April 14, 2022, at 7 p.m. at the Firth School Auditorium in Firth, Idaho.
