Fir Street closes for sewer line installation

SHELLEY – West Fir Street will close later today, March 4, except to local traffic, from U.S. Highway 91 to Park Avenue, as a new sewer line is installed.

A new sewer line is being installed along Fir Street from Emerson east to Lincoln Avenue.  The entire project will take approximately six weeks to complete.  During that time, certain sections of Fir Street will be closed.

“We plan to close West Fir Street between U.S. Highway 91 and Park Avenue later today.  Only local traffic will be allowed in this area,†Shelley Public Works Director Justin Johnson said.  “It will remain closed for about ten days.â€

As the construction moves toward the east other parts of Fir Street will also be closed, except to local traffic.  The installation will block traffic into and out of Sunrise Elementary School.

“HK Contractors (the installer of the sewer line) and the school district have worked out a plan to do most of the construction in this area during Spring break,†Johnson said.   â€œThe school district will work with the contractor if any additional closures are required during school.â€

The sewer line installation upgrades the existing sewer line underneath the street.

“We need to replace the current line because it is too small.   It runs at 113 percent capacity during peak times of the day,†Johnson said.   “Currently, this line ranges from 8 to 12-inches in size. An 18-inch line will replace it.”

The new sewer line will also handle the wastewater from the two new developments east of Shelley.  Both The Parks and Fox Crossing will flow into this new trunk line.

The project will cost $1,058,528.50 to complete.  The contract went out for bid to three excavators, and HK Contractors was the lowest of the three bidders.
