Just Serve serves those who serve us

FIRTH – Many people turned out last Thursday night, March 3, to serve the Firth Fire Department, which needed help.

Last April, as a fire roared through the Firth River Bottoms, it was the Firth Fire Department that sprang into action saving lives, homes, and structures. But that is not the only time they have come to the rescue to help the people of Firth, Basalt, and Goshen. For years, they have done so on cold wintery nights or hot summer evenings.

On January 10, an unfortunate fire, started by one of the plugged-in fire engineers, destroyed the Firth Fire Department burning several vehicles and damaging others. The smoke damage made a mess of all their tools and instruments.

Since then, communities have been giving back to Firth. For example, the city of Boise donated a fully furnished pumper truck for the town.

“Connie Clawson of Just Serve contacted us and asked what we needed,” Firth Assistant Fire Chief Mike Jensen said. “So, we picked a day when we would bring our stuff from the old building to here to be cleaned.”

On Thursday night, many people of Firth turned out and cleaned the equipment and tools the firefighters use while fighting a fire. While women and children worked on those items, men built and hung shelves for tools and equipment for firefighting.

According to Jensen, the Firth fire department plans to rent the building until a new station is built.

“We have a lease, and so we’re going to start bringing our trucks here,” said Jensen. “Currently, we have a few at the school’s bus barn and a couple in cellars.

The temporary fire station is the garage section of an old potato warehouse located north of the Firth Mill on the east side of the railroad tracks in Firth.
