Black ice caused multiple accidents throughout the area this morning

SHELLEY:  Icy road conditions made driving conditions treacherous for everyone driving to work Tuesday morning, December 27. Local news, law enforcement agencies, and drivers bombarded social media sites with photos and videos of cars crashing into one another and flying off the freeway.

What can drivers expect for the rest of the week on local roads, highways, and freeways?

According to the National Weather Service, there will be periods of rain lingering this evening around 8 o’clock. After that, temperatures will drop below freezing, and some snow is expected to fall around the Blackfoot Shelley area overnight. But, no more rain.

According to the National Weather Service, temperatures will be at freezing or below for the remainder of the holiday week. They anticipate some snow showers on Friday and later a more significant snow event on New Year’s Day, Sunday, January 1

Interstate 15 and US Highway 91 are currently having a salt treatment reapplied to them, according to the Idaho Transportation Department, District 5. The problem occurred when the rain washed the salt solution off the road, and then it froze.

Of course, the best defense against black ice is to slow down and keep your distance from cars in front of you.
