The Bob Kirkham Award given to two dedicated Russet fans
SHELLEY – Two dedicated fans of the Shelley Russets were given the Bob Kirkham Ward for their dedication, enthusiasm, and concern for Shelley athletics during the Shelley High School men’s basketball game where Shelley lost its conference game to Blackfoot 49 – 54.
Last night, at the Shelley High School men’s basketball game, Verla Ottley and Marsha Dye received the Bob Kirkham Award as the best fans of Shelley athletics.
Marsha Dye received the award for the 2019-20 season, which was not awarded last year because of Covid-19. Verla Ottley received the award for the 2020-21 season.
After the award ceremony, Marsha said, “I am proud of Shelley High School, and I love our mascot-the King Russet. We are unique and the only ones in the world that have that mascot. I am proud of our team, win or lose. They have had a real battle in this league. I love supporting the athletes, especially my children and grandchildren over the years. I love watching their improvement and try to give a positive comment to the ones I see after each game.”
Verla Ottley said she loves watching the Russets play. “it always brings me joy.” “My husband [Stan Ottley] passed away October 20, 2020, from Covid-19. He used to come to all the games and loved watching the kids play.
The Bob Kirkham Award was created in 2014 by Shelley High School student Erin Durbin. She noticed Bob, throughout the years, was always at the sporting events cheering on the Russets. She felt he deserved some recognition for his avid support. Hence, the Bob Kirkham Award was created.
This award aims to encourage community involvement and commemorates dedicated fans who give of their times and means.
