High-speed chase through north Bingham County ends in crash
SHELLEY – A high-speed chase through Bingham County sends one to the hospital in a single-vehicle accident at 1500 North and 1200 East.
According to the Bingham County Sheriff’s office, an adult male driver with an outstanding felony warrant for eluding police sped off from an attempted traffic stop in Pocatello, which then began a 45-mile high-speed chase. The man continued north from Pocatello along U.S. Highway 91 through the Fort Hall Indian Reservation at a high rate of speed. The chase continued into Blackfoot, where Blackfoot Police took over the pursuit.Â
According to Chief Rod Mohler of the Shelley Police Department, the chase continued north on U.S. Highway 91 toward Firth, with speeds reaching upwards of 114 miles per hour. At Firth, the driver turned off the highway and continued northeast along various county roads.
Just south of 1500 North along 1200 East, a Bingham County Deputy waited and threw spike strips onto the roadway to stop the driver. According to law enforcement, the driver left the roadway in an attempt to avoid the spikes. As he did, the vehicle hit an embankment launching it airborne through the intersection before it hit the ground, flipping several times before coming to rest. The car ended up on its tires in the middle of a field in southern Bonneville County.
The suspect was transported by ambulance to the hospital. His condition is unknown. However, Mohler said the suspect was conscious and speaking to law enforcement before being transported.
Multiple law enforcement agencies were involved in the pursuit, including the Idaho State Police, Bingham County Sheriffs Office, Blackfoot Police, Shelley Police, and Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office. First responders at the accident included Shelley’s QRU and Idaho Falls, and Bonneville County Fire Departments.
