Kindness Spreads Throughout Shelley High School
Shelley — Shelley High School’s Natural Helpers are helping to spread kindness. They made a Random Acts of Kindness calendar with something nice to do for each day until March 18.
“It’s been a tradition ever since I’ve been a natural helper leader. We do a bunch of things to promote kindness during this month,†said SHS Natural Helpers program teacher Teresa Dye.
According to the SHS website, Natural Helpers is a program that is designed to help others at Shelley High School and the other schools in the district, as well as the community. This year, students in the program came up with so many ideas they put together a three-month-long Kindness Calendar.
“We as a class brainstormed a bunch of ideas and decided that we wanted to do all of them,†Dye said.
Dye also mentioned a variety of other activities Natural Helpers is doing in the community..
“We are doing Coin Wars with Firth High School to raise money for the food banks and the food pantry. We’re collecting hot can tops for the Ronald McDonald House,†Dye said.
Natural Helpers students aren’t the only ones at the high school going out of their way to help others. Jackson Campbell, a student at SHS, decided he wanted to do something as well. SHS is selling cookies for Valentine’s Day and Campbell thought he’d use that to do some good.
“I came up with the idea with a couple of buddies to cheer up this girl that was struggling and said, ‘ You guys, we should each donate a cookie to her and make her feel awesome,†Campbell said.
But Campbell didn’t stop there.
“And then I thought, what if I could do this for a bunch of people,†he said.
Campbell goes around the halls asking others to donate. He asks anyone he can find to help his cause and it’s definitely paying off.
“So far I’ve earned around $80,†Campbell said.
Campbell’s mom also played a big part in the project
“I told my mom and she said, ‘ Oh that’s awesome, I’ll give you $20,’†he said..
Campbell said he feels good doing charity.
“Go do charity. Charity makes you feel good; it makes you feel awesome about yourself. You get to see the difference it makes in their lives and though it might be small it can help a lot,†Campbell said.
