Bingham County Meet proves fruitful for Shelley’s athletes
SHELLEY:  Shelley Russets’ talent shines at Bingham County Meet held at Shelley’s Track and Field complex, May 7.
The Bingham County Meet may have only consisted of Shelley, Blackfoot, Snake River, and Watersprings School, but the competition was almost as fast and strong as the high winds on Friday.
Shelley Russet Ryker Clinger, a sophomore, continues to impress his coaches and teammates with his work ethic and his desire to be the best. And, this week, it paid off.
Clinger took 1st place in the 100-Meter race with a personal best time of 11.56 and 1st in the 200-meter race with a personal best time of 23.70.
Not only did Clinger do well in his events, but he and his teammates also swept the 100 and 200-Meter relays.
Clinger, Treyce Jensen, Zaine Dixon, and Brayden Johnson took 1st in the 100-Meter relay at 44.83. Clinger, Jensen, Jace Thatcher, and Johnson also took 1st in the 200-meter relay with a time of 1:33.13.
After the races, they talked amongst one another on what they need to work on for districts, and perfecting their handoffs was top of their list. “We’ve got this, said Clinger.â€
Shelley athletes showed their endurance and determination in the long-distance races, especially in the wonderful Idaho wind. Zac Gillet took 2nd in the 800-Meter race with a personal best time of 2:09.45.
Ben Vernon took 3rd in the killer 1600-Meter race with a time of 5:08.10, while Mike Hansen took 3rd in the excruciating 3200-Meter race with a time of 12:04.19.
Max McIsaac, a senior, took 1st in the high jump with a personal best of 5’6â€. This may be McIsaac’s first year. Still, he is showing immense talent in his events. Jorgen Callahan and Joshua Johnson both tied for 2nd place with a distance of 5’2â€.
Zaine Dixon was impressive to watch at the long jump. With districts coming up, he is feeling more confident and comfortable with his form. This week Dixon took 2nd place with a distance of 19’1â€, and McIsaac took 4th with a distance of 18’4â€.
Jorgen Callahan and Darin Larkin both did great in the triple jump. Callahan took 2nd with a distance of 31’6.5â€. Larkin took 3rd with a distance of 28’11â€.
Shelley men threw up some good numbers in the Shot Put event. Chaz Peterson took 2nd with a distance of 38’4â€. Nathan Thyberg took 4th, with a personal best distance of 36’10â€, and Brayden Swanson took 5th with a personal best distance of 34’9â€.
Three of Shelley’s athletes also placed top 8 in Discus. Nathan Thyberg took 3rd, with a personal best distance of 95’3â€, Jacob Meek took 4th, with a distance of 91’2â€, and Chaz Peterson took 5th, with a distance of 86’7â€.
Shelley Russet women came to the event prepared to win, and win they did.
Savannah Ivins and Reese Callahan had an impressive day. They represented Shelley well in all of their events.
Savannah Ivins took 1st in the 800-meter race, with a time of 2:31.50. Ivins also took 1st in the 1600-meter race, with a time of 5:56.39.
Reese Callahan stepped it up this week, taking 1st place in the 100-meter hurdles, with a time of 17.08, along with 1st place in the 300-meter hurdles, with a time of 52.49. Callahan also took 2nd place in the long jump with a distance of 15’5â€.
Clara Benson took 1st in Triple Jump with a personal best distance of 32’6.25â€. Katelyn Benson took 3rd with a personal best distance of 30’8â€.
The Russet women also blew away the competition in the 100 and 200-meter relay races. Shantell Christensen, Tessa Smith, Michela Moulton, and Sabina Keenan took 1st in the 100-meter relay at 52.89 seconds. Christensen, Moulton, Brooke Hess, and Keenan also took 1st in the 200-meter relay with a time of 1:55.77.
Tessa Smith helped the 100-meter relay team take 1st. Then, she took home a couple of individual 1st place spots as well. She took 1st in Shot Put, with a distance of 33’8â€. Her teammate Danica Valdez took 2nd, with a distance of 28’3â€.
Smith also took 1st in Discus with a distance of 91’5†and 2nd in the 100-meter race, with a time of 13.52.
Districts are coming up this next weekend, and Shelley is planning to bring the heat. So, come and support the Russets at Thunder Ridge High School northeast of Idaho Falls Thursday, May 13 at 10 a.m.
