UPDATE: Water main repaired

UPDATE: 10:34 a.m. the water main has been repaired, well number three is back up and running and operations have returned to normal.

SHELLEY — City crews are rushing to repair a main water line as water levels drop.

The city is asking residents to shut off their water and conserve as much as they can after a main water line broke in the early Tuesday morning in the area of N. Byron and Maple.

“We had a water main break at about 2:15, 2:30 this morning. We’re in the middle of getting it repaired,” City of Shelley Public Works Director Justin Johnson said. “We’re just asking everybody if they can conserve water because our water tanks are getting low.”

The city sent a text message to residents shortly after 6 a.m. asking them to shut off sprinkler systems and to avoid showering unless necessary.

“We’ve got our biggest well shut down right now. That’s our issue. I’ve got three other wells running, but those three other wells only add up to my one big well. So we are like at half copacity of water right now,” Johnson said.

He said they hope to have the broken water line fixed within the next few hours.
