Two people injured when a motorcycle collides with two vehicles
BONNEVILLE COUNTY – A motorcyclist and vehicle driver were injured after the motorcycle driver struck a Jeep Wrangler while passing another vehicle southbound on U.S. Highway 91, north of Shelley.
On August 13, 2021, at 5:43 p.m., Idaho State Police responded to an injury crash on southbound U.S. Highway 91at milepost 122, which is north of Shelley.
According to the Idaho State Police news release, Robert Dietz, 63, of Chico, California, was traveling southbound on the highway between 65th South and 81st South (Cotton Road) when he attempted to pass another vehicle, striking a jeep wrangler traveling in the northbound lane. Dietz then struck the vehicle he was passing before coming to rest on the shoulder of the southbound lane.
The news release states Carol Anderson, 73, of Shelley, was driving a 2013 Jeep Wrangler when Dietz struck it. She was transported by ground ambulance to East Idaho Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries.
Cody Gray, 29, of Shelley, was driving a 2019 Toyota 4Runner, which Dietz passed when the accident occurred. Gray was not injured in the accident. However, his vehicle was damaged when Dietz struck it.
Dietz was also transported by ground ambulance to East Idaho Regional Medical Center with unknown injuries. He was not wearing a helmet, according to ISP’s news release.
A passerby, who asked to remain anonymous, told Community Pioneer they attended to Mr. Dietz while waiting for medical help. “He [Dietz] was conscious and awake while being placed into the ambulance,†the person said.
According to ISP’s news release, Gray was wearing his seat belt. It was unknown if Anderson was wearing a seat belt.
The southbound lanes were blocked for approximately two and a half hours while Idaho State Police investigated the accident. The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Department assisted them with traffic control.
U.S. Highway 91 is currently being widened to a 5-lane highway between 65th South and Shelley. “This widening project should be completed by August 20,” Brian Hanson, project manager with HK Contractors of Idaho Falls, said earlier this month.
