Local youth invited to learn about suicide prevention and more

SHELLEY — Youth from the area are invited to learn about leadership, mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

On Tuesday, April 12, at 4:30 p.m. the League of Idaho Cities is stopping the Shelley Fire Station as part of The Tandem Tour. The goal of the tour is to teach high school-aged youth about mental health awareness, drug and alcohol abuse prevention, suicide prevention, youth leadership, and building community capacity.

“Working with music therapist Audrey Draper, attendees will learn to identify a peer who may be struggling, how to gain access to mental health resources, and skills to help them cope with the challenges brought on by COVID-19,” according to a League of Idaho Cities news release.

Shelley’s Mayors Youth Advisory Council is attending the presentation. All other youths who are interested are also welcome to attend.

“With my Mayors Youth Council kids, I have at least 15 in there, and I asked each one of them to bring a friend,” Mayors Youth Council advisor Mikel Anderson said.

The League of Idaho Cities is a part of the Association of Idaho Cities.

According to the League of Idaho Cities Web Page, its mission is to work with community stakeholders to advance the interests of Idaho Citizens through strengthening the capacity of Idaho’s cities.
