Gerald William Fowers obituary

Gerald (Gerry) William Fowers, 80, of Ogden, Utah, passed away from an extended illness on June 3, 2023.

Gerry was born on April 30, 1943, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, the son of Thurston Elmo and Barbara Poole Fowers. He attended school in Shelley, Idaho, where he graduated with the class of 1961. He was active in the drama program and was the Shelley High School Russet mascot for two years.

After graduating, he moved to Ogden, Utah, where he attended Weber State College, graduating in 1965 with a Bachelor of Science degree in History. He was involved in the drama department and was elected to be the Weber State Wildcat mascot his senior year.

While attending Weber State, Gerry worked at George’s Market on 36th and Quincy Avenue and was well-known and admired by his associates and customers.

After graduating, Gerry joined the Peace Corps, where he was assigned to Thailand. He completed his training at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, in the fall of 1966 and was then assigned to work with the farmers in northern Thailand.

He served three years in the Peace Corps; in 1970, he began teaching English as a second language in Bangkok. He taught first in secondary schools, then was hired to teach English at Bangkok University. Gerry loved Thailand, the Thai people, and their culture. He embraced the Buddhist philosophy and kept those beliefs in his heart until he passed. One of his most beloved memories was when he had the honor of an Audience before King Bhumibol Adulyadej (or King Rama IX) and Queen Sirikit, the reigning King and Queen of Thailand.

After returning to the United States in 1994, Gerry worked for the State of Utah in the Office of Recovery Services until he retired in 2009. He was able to return to Thailand twice after his retirement. Gerry is survived by his sister, Barbara King, Thornton, Colorado; two brothers, Leslie (Kathleen), Meridian, Idaho; Richard (Janece), Ammon, Idaho; and 14 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
