City Council Recap
SHELLEY – Shelley city council met last Tuesday night, February 8, to discuss various issues.
The city council met last Tuesday night at their regularly-scheduled meeting. Community Pioneer was unable to broadcast the event due to a technical issue with a computer, which has been resolved.
The council discussed the following points.
- Fox Crossing Development – The city requires all infrastructure, streets, lighting, and signage in that phase or division to be completed before any certificate of occupancy is granted for homes developed in that section. They figure division will consist of approximately 88 lots. The city wants to restrain the developer to 75 homes per year. The city council agreed the Fox Crossing Development agreement must coincide with the Parks Development agreement as to when and how the Taylor Highway is widened and improved with curb, gutter, sidewalk, and landscaping. The city wants both the Parks Development and Fox Crossing to work on that issue simultaneously.
- Harry Wwitherald came before the council requesting a letter to the health department allowing him to have a septic system on his property even though he will be annexed into the city as his property now touches the city limits. He is purchasing the old shop and gravel pit of Morrell Hamptons along 900 East. The property touches the southeast corner of the Parks Development. However, it is unknown when sewer will be developed in that area. The city council agreed for the letter to be written.
- The Police Chief announced they have new hire for the police force. The individual comes from Rigby. He is certified and has three years of experience in law enforcement. He lives in the Skyline area of Idaho Falls. The chief expressed excitement about him coming on the force because once the new officer returns from the post, the department will be fully staffed for the first time in 7 years. The new officer will enter at a Level 3 pay and will automatically be on probation for one year.
- The city is working with Idaho Falls and Ammon to coordinate their Movie in the Park events with the other cities. Shelley is considering Movie in the Park for each Monday and Thursday, starting June 30 and running through July.
- The city will have Spring Cleanup from April 18 through the 22nd of this year. Councilwoman Kim Westergard would like to have a Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser on April 23 at the Senior Citizen Center to raise money for the Firth Fire Department, which lost its buildings and several fire units to an unfortunate fire last month. She also announced that Just Serve would like to have a service project on that same day.
- Councilwomen Kim Westergard also announced the city pool would be offering lifeguard classes to those that want to sign up.
- Public Works Director Justin Johnson stated the public works department is replacing the wood chips around the playground equipment at the swimming pool park.
The meeting was then adjourned until February 22.
